House dust mites can make lung inflammation worse
Many doctors believe the activity of invading neutrophiles, white blood cells designed to protect damaged lungs from further harm, may be actually prolonging the healing process and that mites may be involved in this process. Neutrophiles, once activated by stimuli, discharge enzymes that can cause further tissue damage resulting in increased inflammation. The most important of these active enzymes is elastase. Exposure to mites has been shown to enhance elastase activity.
Chronic inflammation is a critical feature of many lung diseases. Inflammation can be made worse by inhaling allergens, a feature of asthma, or from irritants such as smoke, ozone, diesel particles, or from a respiratory viral infection.(1,2) Inflammation is the result of the body’s immune system defending delicate tissue from harm. The white blood cells that participate in this line of defence include eosinophiles and neutrophiles. (3)

In children repeated episodes of wheezing is considered a symptom of asthma. Traditionally asthma has been mainly associated with allergy, however, recent research on the new sophisticated anti-allergy drug Xolair, has found that not all asthma symptoms are allergy related. (4,5) From these results doctors now speculate that allergy accounts for about half of all symptoms. (6) To emphasise this, they point out that 70% of adult ‘late-onset’ asthma is not allergy based. (7,8) This means that patients, who are clinically tested and confirmed to be allergic to specific allergens, can no longer be confident that their asthma symptoms are caused by exposure to these allergens. Something else is happening in asthma.
Many doctors believe it is the activity of invading neutrophiles.(9) These are white blood cells designed to protect vulnerable lungs which are under attack, under repair or hindered by chronic inflammation.(10) The doctors believe the activity of these cells may actually prolong asthma symptoms! If the doctors are proven to be right, then the whole of asthma management must be reviewed. It may no longer be appropriate for patients to rely upon drugs that artificially open airways in harmful environments in order to prevent wheezing or coughing. Exposure to known risks can encourage neutrophil proliferation and the damaging non-allergy inflammatory activity that follows.(11,12)
Furthermore, the public should be aware of important new research on the activity of the house dust mite enzyme, Der p1 because it not only promotes allergic reactions but also has been shown to hinder important regulators of the pro-inflammatory enzyme elastase. (13,14) This interference may prolong the healing process following lung tissue injury. Avoiding mite contact during this critical time may be beneficial.
